Onion Juice – A Remedy for Gray Hair

In the past, onion juice was given as an alternative method to help people turn their gray hair back into the black natural color. Several years ago, researchers came out saying that they had found a substance that would cure to vitiligo and gray hair at the same time. Vitiligo is a disease that associated with having white spots on the body. Onion juice has been found out to produce this substance once it is in the body. The question remains, does onion juice really help fight against gray hair? If this is true, we need to know how it should be applied on to the hair.

It is human nature to panic once they see a gray hair. Luckily, there are hair dyes that can be used to turn the hair black once again. Unfortunately, these last only for about two to three weeks. An individual with gray hair needs to continually reapply the dyes depending on how fast his or her hair grows.

What Causes Gray Hair

Scientists in Europe have recently made a publication on the causes of gray hair. This has been included in the FASEB Journal. They also listed serval measures that can be taken to avoid gray hair.
Researchers claim that people with gray hair have an accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in their hair follicles. This has been linked to stress.

The body cells require only a specific amount of hydrogen peroxide which is normal. It is essential to note that the amount of hydrogen peroxide in the body is affected by certain enzymes in the body.

People who have gray hair tend to have higher production of hydrogen peroxide in the body than the normal requirement. Moreover, their bodies could experience low levels of the enzymes that are used to decompose hydrogen peroxide in the body.

Hydrogen peroxide inhibits production of melanin in the body. Melanin is actually responsible for the color pigment in both the human skin and also the hair. As a result, the hair begins to turn gray.
This means that one only needs to find a substance that will eliminate hydrogen peroxide in the body. The substance needs to be safe for human health. Researchers claim that they have found the perfect element to resolve this gray hair situation.

A Remedy for Gray Hair

It is a so-called modified UVB-activated pseudocatalase. We add the prefix “pseudo” because it is a replicated enzyme that resembles the body’s own enzyme, which can rapidly degrade hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen in the organism so that it loses its bleaching effect.

The pseudocatalase is also abbreviated as PC-KUS and is to be applied directly to the scalp for the purpose of hair repigmentation.

A Remedy for Vitiligo

By the way, PC-KUS should not only prevent the development of the gray hair, but also help with vitiligo. Vitiligo is the so-called white spot disease, a skin ailment in which some parts of the skin become discolored, which ultimately leads to a patchy appearance.

Vitiligo’s mechanism of development is, according to scientists, nearly the same as that leading to gray hair.

Both problems – the graying of the hair and vitiligo – are particularly detrimental to the affected person, according to Prof. Dr. Karin U. Schallreuter. If hair and skin can be pigmented again, to recover their natural color, that will improve the quality of life of the people affected enormously.

Study With Vitiligo Patients

Schallreuter conducted the study in close collaboration with the University of Greifswald in Germany and the British Center for Skin Sciences at the University of Bradford.

An international group of 2411 patients with vitiligo was examined. It was found that the patients suffered from extreme oxidative stress and, at the same time, low catalase activity.

So what has all this got to do with onion juice?

Does Onion Juice Fight Gray Hair?

For many centuries now, onion juice has been used as a home remedy against gray hair. It has also helped fight hair loss.

When preparing the onion juice, one has to be careful to use the right part of the onion. The most external peels of onions are used to color Easter eggs or add color to the hair. The juice from the actual onion ensures that the hair grows back in its natural color.

How Does Onion Juice Work?

Onion juice is known to have an antibacterial element. This helps to cleanse the human scalp while still stimulating blood flow.

The second function of onion juice is its ability to stimulate the actual production of a catalase enzyme which breaks down hydrogen peroxide as stated earlier.

When onion juice is applied onto the scalp and exposed to the sun, it helps to fight against hair loss. There is a catalyst that is activated by the ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

This goes hand in hand with the report made by John Gerard (lived in 1545-1642) who wrote a lot concerning hair loss and onion juice.

The effects of onion juice are intensified when exposed to UV radiation. Unfortunately, not had been studied about UV radiation.

Onion Juice and Solar Exposure Against Hair Loss

The above-mentioned pseudocatalase, named PC-KUS, is more potent than the natural form, because it is activated by UVB radiation.

What is interesting in this context is what the famous naturopathic physician John Gerard (1545-1612) once wrote about hair loss and onion juice:

“The onion juice, which is applied to a head in the bright sun, brings the hair back very quickly.”

Thus, the UV radiation was in simultaneous action with the onion juice, intensifying its effect. Only, at that time, we did not know much about catalases and UV radiation…

Onion Juice – the Application

Even today, many curative practitioners recommend the onion juice either alone or in the combination with some other natural substances as a great remedy for the gray and thinning hair.

Recommendations for use are only slightly accurate, which may also be due to the fact that the use of the onion juice is so simple:

One takes a cut onion and rubs the cut surface over the human scalp. Or you can just squeeze the onion with a juicer and massage this juice a few times a day into the scalp.

In addition, one should, of course, also pay attention to comprehensively supply the hair with all the necessary nutrients. A healthy, nutrient-rich diet is, therefore, indispensable for the hair, since it can help to resist oxidative stress as best as possible.

What Nutrients Do You Need for Your Hair?

For you to have healthy hair, you need Vitamin B, Calcium, Iron and Omega 3 fatty acids. Your daily diet should at least include two of these elements. Vitamin A and trace elements, antioxidants are also vital micronutrients. There are several other foods you could consume to help with your hair improvement process which are;

  • Nuts and seeds
  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Black pepper
  • Winter squash
  • Onions
  • Root vegetables
  • Legumes such as beans
  • Micro-algae

However, there are several foods you need to avoid at all costs when aiming to achieve healthy hair:

  • Fast food products
  • Sugary foods and soft drinks
  • White flour products
  • Processed foods such as sausages and cheese.

If you have any issues with your scalp, you should consider a special scalp treatment program. Shun from this, however, if you are suffering from hair loss.
